Expansive and emotionally precise, Island Ghosts marks a clear evolution for Toronto bassist-composer Alex Lakusta. Written for a six-piece ensemble, the album moves fluidly between jazz, post-rock, and electronic textures, guided by Lakusta’s intuitive sense of space and momentum.
Anchored by “Island Ghosts Pt. 2” and “Waves in Pattern,” the record balances intricate musicianship with restraint. Melodic basslines lead the way, while horns add warmth and lyricism, and shifting rhythms and atmospheric keys create a feeling of constant motion. At its core, Island Ghosts is what Lakusta describes as “an abstract love story without words.”
The music unfolds like memory—warm, fleeting, and vivid—exploring connection and distance through sound rather than language. Designed as a cohesive listening experience, the album favours depth over immediacy, inviting listeners to slow down and sit with each moment as it reveals itself.
Island Ghosts released on April 17, 2026.
